Kate Winslet: highly respected Oscar winning actress, beauty icon, mother of two, and now… action hero? No, Kate wasn’t filming a scene for an action-packed thriller on Monday when she ran out of a blazing mansion while carrying a 90-year-old woman to safety - she was evacuating from a real-life fire that consumed billionaire Richard Branson’s Caribbean compound with his elderly mother in tow. Kate was vacationing at Branson’s private Necker Island paradise when Tropical Storm Irene unleashed a lightning storm around four in the morning, setting the $70 million mansion on fire and destroying it as a result. While luckily no one was hurt, Branson singled out Kate as the true hero of the early morning disaster, blogging, “Many thanks to Kate Winslet for helping to carry my 90-year mum out of the main house to safety.” While it was tragic for Branson and his family to lose their vacation home of over thirty years, far worse could have happened if Kate hadn’t so quickly sprung into action - and now she can add “real-life hero” to her already impressive and ever-growing resume!
