NOT: Susan Sarandon Calls the Pope a “Nazi”

First, musician Hank Williams Jr. compared President Obama to Hitler and gets his Monday Night Football anthem yanked from ESPN… and now, Susan Sarandon refers to Pope Benedict as a Nazi and receives backlash from the Anti-Defamation League and Catholics everywhere.  Susan was at last weekend’s Hamptons Film Festival when during an on-stage interview, she told her audience about the time she sent the Pope a copy of the book version of her film Dead Man Walking, and then clarified her story by saying, “The last one, not this Nazi one we have right now.”  Susan’s always been known as one who likes to stir the pot by proudly advocating for many political and social causes.  But while she has every right to say whatever she wants under the first amendment – and no one should deny her that – her choice of words were definitely extreme and offensive to a huge part of the population.  As someone who has adamantly defended gay and other human rights causes, Susan’s statement seemed unnecessarily inflammatory.  If she meant to piss people off (and this wouldn’t be the first time,) she certainly succeeded!
