Podcasts That Will Change Your Life

Learn a new language. Understanding a foreign language can open up new opportunities personally and professionally (“Transfer to the Paris office? Oui, bien sur!”). But learning a whole new set of vocabulary and grammar rules can be overwhelming, too. That’s why breaking each lesson into manageable chunks makes so much sense. Radio Lingua includes free podcasts like CoffeeBreak Spanish and OneMinute French so you can hear the vocabulary in context and move ahead on your own time. Or, if you’d like to wow your boss with your incredible command of English, then check out Grammar Girl, which covers the finer points of the English language, including mixed metaphors, idioms, and comma splices.

Manage your money. Given the current economic climate, it’s likely that thousands of people will resolve to save more money and stick to a budget. And there are several podcasts for this segment of the population, too. For a serious, in-depth look at investments and personal finance, check out Sound Investing, a Seattle-based radio show that Money named “Best Money Podcast.” For a lighter look at financial topics, try Feed the Pig, in which host Tim Farrell tackles topics like mortgages, tax refunds, and the current economic crisis by interviewing listeners and experts.

Get fit. Joining a gym and shedding a few extra pounds is another popular resolution. Daunting, but very doable if you break your goal into smaller steps. For starters, consider downloading a few podcasts to get you pumped about your workout. Podrunner includes free, high-energy workout playlists for interval training or regular workouts. Another option, My Free Trainer, features brief workout videos that you can play in iTunes or download to your iPod. Round out your fitness regimen with tips from the Nutrition Diva, who discusses subjects like the pros and cons of soy, water intake, and the benefits of fiber in short, highly digestible segments.

Jump-start your career. If you’re hoping to land a new job or score a promotion this year, then there are a plethora of podcasts for you, too. 30/20 Vision  is hosted by three young authors who share advice for twentysomething women as they navigate issues in their careers and personal lives. 30/20 Vision focuses on general work/life skills such as dealing with stress and building relationships, while Secrets of the Job Hunt covers specifics like job hunting on Twitter and acing an interview. Both podcasts offer helpful career insights on the go.
