Living the Dream: Molly Jasper
Living the Dream: Molly Jasper

Name: Molly Jasper

Age: 29

Location: Seattle

Education: B.A. in Art from Linfield College, degree in Interior Design from the Seattle Art Institute.

Job Title: Senior display coordinator for Anthropologie, the apparel, accessory, and home-decor retailer.

What She Does: In addition to the amazing displays and elaborate art installations she creates at her home store, Molly brainstorms design ideas for the entire apparel and home-furnishings company. Look for one of her concepts this winter in an Anthropologie near you. She also mentors display coordinators at other stores, making sure everyone’s look is fresh, inspired, and totally beautiful.

How She Got Her Gig: A lot of hard work and perseverance. After majoring in art in college, Molly studied interior design and started at Anthropologie on the sales floor. She voiced her interest in working on displays and took every opportunity to prove her artistic self. Within the year she was promoted to assistant display coordinator.

Working Nine to Five: Um, no. Molly usually starts work at 7 a.m. when the store is quiet and she can pull out the arts-and-crafts supplies and get busy. Other weeks (she makes anywhere from one to three trips a month) she is on the road, attending store openings and corporate planning meetings. Molly also takes Inspiration Days, a perk she says is “one of the best parts of my job.” On those days she gets a break from routine and the chance to rev up creative energy with visits to museums or thrift stores. On a recent morning at Seattle’s Fremont Market, an idea struck Molly when she spotted a plastic bin filled with hundreds of scissors in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Half an hour later she left with 50 sets of multi-colored scissors and a blossoming idea for a display to place behind a cash register.

Inner Theme Song: “What a Feeling” by Irene Cara, from one of her favorite ’80s movies, Flashdance. “I love the ’80s. I have a mix CD that I bring to all my store openings. It makes the long hours more fun.”

This Job’s for You If: Creativity is what you’re made of. In order to succeed at this high-impact art job, Molly says you must be innovative, self-motivated, and visionary. “But you can’t be afraid of taking direction!” she says. “Being a display coordinator for Anthropologie is a delicate blend of implementing the ideas of others and being inspired by your own. It’s great to work in such a supportive and creative environment.”
