Default In a Career Rut

Its a long story, but basically I have found myself working as an adminstrative assistant-definitely NOT the job I wanted after I graduated college with a degree in music!

How can I break out of the mold? I've learned a TON from being in my position, but I am really getting tired of this position.

Is it even worth me trying right now? With the recession, should I just be thankful I have a job at all, and live with it for a couple more years?

Just curious. I don't want to be someone's secretary forever!!!

The good news is, as an administrative assistant, you have a ton of transferable skills. No, it's never too late to find work you're truly passionate about.

You're right though, it's a difficult time to be job-searching. Consider taking this time to explore your interests, maybe take some classes in your free time, boost up your resume, and figure out exactly what it is you want to pursue. Also, start making connections with people in that field. Then, as the economy starts to shape up (hopefully no more than a few years), you'll be in the perfect position to land your dream job.

Steph-

Thanks for responding. To make my career rut even worse...I'm getting married in August.

This is good. And this is bad. My fiance just got his doctorate, and we may be moving right after our wedding because of his job (he, obviously, know EXACTLY what he wants to do).

This is great for me, as if we have to move, it is a "nice" way for me to leave my job without much in the way of hurt feelings.

The only problem is, I am so busy with all the wedding planning, that I don't have the time to dedicate right now for the career hunt.

I feel so flighty saying this, but I feel confident that this is a legit problem. I kinda feel like in today's world, somehow us ladies are expected to do it ALL: Have a great job, raise children, cook, clean, be a professional opera singer...etc...

So anyway, what do you think is the best way to manage all of this? Where are some good, easy places for me to start doing research into some self discovery on my career?

Thanks for your advice!
