Dear Nicole,
I am ashamed to admit it, but I am one of the employees who received a bonus from AIG. I certainly didn’t expect to get a bonus of any kind, and was shocked when I received a hefty check in the mail. But it was explained to me that my company was contractually bound to spend the federal bailout money this way, and therefore I didn’t question it. I am just a hardworking mother of two who's trying to support her family, and I don’t believe I have done anything wrong—yet I feel like I’m on America’s Most Wanted List. Yes, the money seems a little outlandish given the current economic crisis, but I wasn’t the one who chose to shell it out. What should I do?
