Ask Nicole

Career Management WORKS

Frustrated with feeling stuck in the early years of my career I engaged a coach. Two years, thousands of dollars and many hours of feeling my inner child later – I decided that I was actually ready for some answers.

By some sheer stroke of great luck I was introduced to a woman by the name of Doreen Saunders. Diminutive in size but powerful in spirit, this seemingly grandma-type woman kicked my ass and changed my life.

I had been lamenting to my friends, my coach, my family – anyone who would listen – that I was destined to write a book. I knew how I would promote it, what it would look like, who I would interview but finally, after many meetings and not one word written down on the page, Doreen finally confronted me with these words that changed my life:

Nothing Comes From Nothing.

Did she hurt my feelings? Of course. Was I pissed off? Without question. Did she scare me? Right into action. Yes, I likely would have arrived at the fact that a book wasn’t going to come from nowhere, but without her prompting I honestly don’t know that I would have had the guts to do it.

I tell you this story because it’s the foundation of my philosophy behind our Career Management services. I started my career at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind as a Director of Career and Technology and fully understand the theory of career success. But the truth is my practice and this brand has been built around getting out and doing it – testing what works and what doesn’t. I also believe in the “coaching” premise that we have our own answers BUT, sometimes we need something a little stronger than, “So, how do you feel about that?” to get us where we need to go.

I expect you’re a busy, intelligent, driven woman. I’m also guessing that you’ve likely tried your hand at therapy or at the very least have a circle of friends who will hold your hand and tell you, “No, no you don’t complain too much.” There are things that are holding you back in your career that your boyfriend, boss, coach, mother all know but are too attached to you to chance actually saying out loud. I’m not. Think of our Career Management (me) as your Doreen. I am going to tell you the thing that will make a difference in your career and your life.

In the coming months we will be building out the Career Management WORKS practice but in the meantime, we have two options for you:

1. If you have an immediate, burning issue (boss hit on you, career suicide in the boardroom, negotiating a raise) and you need some help, write to me at asknicole@nicolewilliams.com and we’ll get back to you within 48 hours.

2. If you have a longer-term issue (don’t have a clue what you want to do with your career, starting a business, promoted to boss), describe your issue in detail in an e-mail to careermanagement@nicolewilliams.com and we’ll get back to you to discuss a longer-term management arrangement.
